Competitive Obedience

The United Kennel Club and The American Kennel Club offer competitive obedience events for German Shepherd owners and their dogs.

Each organization has a few differences but overall the goal is to demonstrate your ability to communicate and work with your dog.

Competitive obedience is one of the most popular sports available to German Shepherds and the breed excels in these competitions due to their intelligence and their eagerness to please.

Why Choose Competitive Obedience?

Competing in obedience will help you train your German Shepherd in basic obedience which gives you more control and as a result your dog can have more freedom. Our world is getting smaller and smaller forcing us to live increasingly closer to each other making obedience an absolute must.

Why not learn to train your dog and have fun at the same time? Not to mention you get to spend more time with your dog and who doesn't want to do that?

Not to mention that unlike agility you do not have to be tip top shape to keep up with your dog. Many owners are not able to run with their dogs or to do a lot of physical activity. Obedience is a great outlet for these owners.

How Do I Get Started in Competitive Obedience?

If you have registered your GSD with the AKC then you will want to get started with them. If you have registered your GSD with the UKC then you would want to get started with that organization.

If you are the proud owner of a rescue German Shepherd that is not registered you can contact either organization and ask about their limited privilage registration or ILP. This registration allows you to compete in sports but not show in conformation.

Regardless of what organization you compete with remember to have fun. Take your time and enjoy every moment with your dog. We only get to share so many years with them. Make them count.
