Is the German Shepherd the Right Breed for You?
German Shepherds are a large breed dog that live to an average of 9-12 years. Before
you decide on a German Shepherd make sure you are ready for the commitment.
Before you buy a German Shepherd you should be 100% certain
the breed is right for you. There are many factors in choosing a German
Shepherd dog and by taking the time to read this article along with other
information available on the web and off you can be sure you're making
an informed decision.
Let's get started ...
The very first thing you should do is look at your lifestyle.
Are you busy? Do you travel alot? Do you have children? If yes, how old are
they? Are you going to sports/dance class/cheerleading/ events all the time?
Is your family up for having a German Shepherd or are they suggesting a different
breed?
Next you should consider why you want a German Shepherd. Are
you looking for a house pet? Working dog? Sport dog?
Do you have the room for a large breed like the German Shepherd?
Are you planning on keeping the dog inside or outside? Dogs thrive in the house
with their family. They do poorly if left outside all the time and this has
also been known to cause issues like aggression, separation anxiety, destructive
chewing and fear.
If you plan on keeping the dog inside are you ready for
the hair? German Shepherds shed year around and usually, "blow coat" during
the spring and fall which means more hair and more grooming and more vaccuming
of your home.
Do you have the time and money to properly train your German
Shepherd? Training is a step you cannot pass on. A German Shepherd puppy must
have socialization, learn house manners, and obedience is a must if you want
your dog to be a well behaved member of society. Training is a lifelong process
from 8 weeks to death.
There is not a single dog on planet earth that is fully
trained after one or two obedience classes. If you are not prepared for this
commitment then you should not get a German Shepherd.
Wait There's More ...
German Shepherds are large active dogs that thrive on working. That
is why they were created after all and you should remember the German Shepherd
is a working dog breed. They are not meant to lay on your lap and wear funny little
clothes.
If you are not prepared to get your dog involved in some work
you should consider getting another breed of dog. If you are looking for
a "protection dog" you should consider the liability of having a dog that
can potentially kill a human being. Are you ready for the law suit?
Considering the cost, time involvement, and possible liability (depending
on why you are getting the dog) are you 100% certain this breed is for you?
If you have any doubts, stop. Re-think your decision and do more
homework. German Shepherds are oustanding dogs and in the right homes with
the right owners are the best dogs in the world. Do yourself and any dog you
will potentially own a favor and think your decision over throughly.
